Yahoo Mail is easy to use and customize. Read on to learn the various options to use Yahoo Mail to its fullest.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED

• Computer
• Internet Access
• Yahoo email program downloaded on the computer
• Yahoo account with a username and password (FREE sign up at www.yahoo.com)

It’s easy to navigate Yahoo Mail and use its features. In addition the inbox and folders, you can access your contacts, calendar, messenger, notes and news. Other tools include changing the theme and settings.

NAVIGATION ICONS

MAIL

Mail gives you a menu of the individual emails in your Inbox and other Folders. The default selection includesDrafts, Sent, Spam, Trash, Smart Views and Recent emails. Clicking on each one opens a list of those emails. To write a new email, click on Compose.

CONTACTS

The Contacts icon opens a menu to view All Contacts and Deleted Contacts, and displays options to import Contacts from other accounts. You can also create a New List.

CALENDAR

The Calendar shows your own personalized calendar enables you to click New Event or add a reminder. You can also click Actions to Create New Calendars, Create New To Do’s List, Share your calendar with others, andAdd details. You can choose how you want the calendar to display by clicking on the options along the top menu bar.

NOTEPAD

The fourth icon leads to the Notepad screen. This option allows you to write notes that can be viewed from any device you use to access your email. This screen also lets you Move and Delete notes.

YAHOO MESSENGER

Clicking the Yahoo Messenger icon opens a pop-up screen. When signed in to Messenger, you can send and receive instant messages to other Yahoo members.

WARNING

You aren’t automatically signed in to Yahoo Messenger when you sign in to Yahoo or Yahoo Mail. You must click on Available to send instant messages.

TIP

Other options allow your status to show as Busy, Invisible or a Custom Status that you designate.

NEWS FEED

The News Feed screen shows News, Finance, Entertainment, Sports, Lifestyles, Technology and Science news for the day.

After you Sign In to your Yahoo Email account, your page features six navigation icons at the top left.

OTHER NAVIGATION TOOLS

The Yahoo email page also includes these other navigation tools.

You can search email, calendars, your other tools or the Internet without opening a new window in your browser. Along the top of the Yahoo email page is a Search box. Use this to search the page you're on by name or subject. You can also click Search Web to conduct a search for Web content.

TIP

The search option changes for the feature you've selected. For example:

• To search for an email from a specific sender, make sure you're in the email feature by clicking on the envelope icon before searching.
• To search for a calendar entry, click on the calendar icon first, and then search.

On the top right of the home page are three more icons. The first is Home and opens your Yahoo home page in a new window. The second opens a pop-up that shows the account you are signed into and gives you the options to Add an Account and Sign Out. The third is Settings. Click on Settings to open a menu to change theTheme, Settings, Privacy and Account Information. This is also where you can upgrade to Ad Free Mail.

TIP

After choosing a theme, click Done to save changes.

After adjusting any of the settings, remember to click Save.

How to: Use Hover email from Yahoo!

Would you like to send and receive email using a personalized email address such as bevis@barber.net instead of a branded webmail account like beavis.barber@yahoo.com?  This tutorial will show you how to add your Hover email address to Yahoo! so you can use it as the from address when sending outgoing mail:

1. Before you complete the steps in this lesson, you will need to configure your Hover Email account to forward messages to your Yahoo! email address.  If you haven't done this already, click here for step-by-step instructions.
    
2. Visit https://mail.yahoo.com and sign in with your Yahoo! ID and password.
   
   
3. Click on Options and select Mail Options.
   
   
4. Select the Mail Accounts option on the left, then click on the Add button.
   
    
5. Enter the following settings:
   
   Account name:  Enter any name for your Hover email account, such as Hover Email.
   Email address:  Enter your Hover email address.
   
   
   
   Click Continue.
6. Click on the Skip this, setup to Send only.
   
   
7. Click OK at the bottom of the Add Account window.  
   
   
   
   
   After a few minutes you should receive an email from Yahoo! Member Services with an email address confirmation link.  Click on the link to verify your Hover email address then you will be able to send email in Yahoo! using your Hover email address.  Simply select your Hover email address from the From list when you are composing a new email.  Your recipients will never know the difference!

Blocking Spam Messages

   Identify the difference between spam and legitimate advertising emails. Not all email advertisements are spam. If you've signed up for a newsletter, or left a box checked when creating an account that signs you up for special offer emails, these messages are legitimate advertisements and can be dealt with quite easily.^[1]

   • Most legitimate advertising emails will clearly state the company that is sending it, as well as provide methods for unsubscribing at the bottom of the email. These messages should not be reported as spam.
   • Spam messages rarely state the company that is sending them, and are often littered with outlandish claims and bad spelling. Many spam messages claim to offer "free trials", "samples", or a prize to a contest you didn't enter.

   Block an address that is repeatedly spamming your inbox. If you are repeatedly receiving messages from an address that is bypassing Yahoo!'s spam filter, you can permanently block it. Note that in order to block addresses, you'll need to log into the Yahoo! Mail web interface on a computer; you can't block addresses from your mobile device's Mail app, for example.

   • Hover over the Gear button in the upper-right corner.
   • Select "Settings" and select the "Blocked Addresses" tab.
   • Type the address in and click "Block".
   • Repeat for any other addresses you want to block.

   Unsubscribe from legitimate marketing email messages. Most of the marketing and junk email that fills up your inbox are actually perfectly safe marketing messages. You can unsubscribe from these messages by following the "Unsubscribe" or "Email preferences" link at the bottom of the message.

   • Unsubscribing from a mailing list may take a week or two to take effect.
   • Don't follow "Unsubscribe" links on messages that are clearly spam and not legitimate marketing messages. This will tell the spambot that it's found a legitimate email address, and you'll receive even more spam.

   Mark messages in your inbox as spam. Yahoo! does a pretty good job of automatically sorting unsolicited spam messages into the Spam folder, where messages will be automatically deleted after one week. If you do find a spam message in your inbox, you can quickly move it to the Spam by checking the box next to the message and then clicking the "Spam" button at the top of the inbox.

   • This will register the sender as a spam sender, and future messages will be sent directly to the Spam folder.
   • Make sure to report only unsolicited bulk email messages. Reporting legitimate business messages can prevent you from receiving important messages from them.

   Report spam messages to anti-spam services. If you want to be more proactive in the fight against spam, you can report spam messages that you receive to anti-spam services. These services work to shut down the connections that spammers have to the internet.

   • SpamCop (spamcop.net is one of the most prolific anti-spam organizations, and you can join and report your unsolicited, bulk spam messages.
   • If you are in the US, you can report spam messages to the FTC by forwarding them to spam@uce.gov.

   Create filters for common spam terms. If you are finding a lot of random spam coming into your inbox, you can use filters to try to automatically send it to your spam folder. You can only create filters from the Yahoo! Mail web interface.

   • Look for common terms in your spam messages that don't appear in your regular emails, such as "enhancement", "supplement", "clinical trial", etc.
   • Hover over the Gear button and select "Settings".
   • Click the "Filters" tab.
   • Click the "Add" button to create a new filter.
   • Use the rules to create a filter that catches your common terms.

      • Click the "Create base name" button and enter in the first part of your disposable email. Don't include any personal information.
      • Click the "Add" button and create the email address. You will need to enter the keyword that determines the specific address, and you can choose where you want the mail to be delivered to. You can now use the new email address to register for services. If you start receiving too much spam from it, you can simply delete the email address.

      Make your email address unscannable if you want to post it. If you want people to be able to contact you at your Yahoo! email address, obfuscating your address can help prevent it from being picked up by spambots.
